El Niño Weather May Damage Spring Bulbs By Ron Dieter, Sunnyfield Greenhouse & Gardens March 10, 1998 How will the unusual winter weather affect daffodils and tulips? Daffodils are rather tough and can take temperatures into the single digits without much harm. Tulips can be damaged and will not bloom well if their flower buds are too close to the surface. A light, dry mulch, such as pine needles or branches, can help protect the foliage from a sharp cold spell. Planting bulbs at the correct depth will help prevent them from coming up too early. In this area, larger tulips should be planted 8-10 inches deep and smaller tulips 5-6 inches deep. Large daffodils should be 6-8 inches deep and smaller ones 4-6 inches deep. Mulching in the fall with a heavy mulch once the ground is frozen will help keep the ground cold and the bulbs dormant until spring. Avoid planting bulbs too close to foundations and dryer and furnace vents where soils can be too warm. |
